Ed and The Fence Post Agency

Ed Hamilton Rosales grew up in rural West Texas – Ranger, Texas to be exact. He was the son of a farrier who shoed large breed, draft horses. His childhood was spent on the back of a quarter horse helping to rustle up cattle…he often helped secure the neighbor’s herd – even though they were 16 miles away. Ed began bull riding and roping at age 6. Ed experienced firsthand the freedom, grit & responsibility that comes with the agricultural lifestyle.
Ed attended Texas A&M University, initially focusing on Agribusiness. However, his passion for health led him to transfer to SUNY Upstate Medical Center, where he refocused his studies on public health as it pertained to rural communities. Ed’s diverse educational background, combined with a lifetime of rural community experience and livestock management (and a bunch of bull riding) has provided Ed with a unique perspective on the needs of beef and dairy farmers everywhere. In sum, Ed gets what you do.

Founding the Agency

About 10 years ago, Ed took those unique experiences and determined that the best way for him to be of service to farmers and ranchers was to provide security. While working with public health & food security organizations, and eventually founding his own, he began to see that there was a giant hole in the market. The farmers & ranchers he worked with directly were chronically underinsured. To his horror, Ed discovered that some didn’t have insurance at all. Tragically, stories of underinsured herds and farm operations completely wiped out without a lick of compensation were more common than they should be. Ed decided to take action

Immediately, Ed delved into what they need, what they want and why they didn’t already have it. Ed discovered that the good folks whose lives revolve around cattle had suffered from neglect by the large insurance carriers. This inattention extended to both beef and dairy operations of all shapes and sizes. Mostly, Ed discovered a complete lack of education on the part of other agents and companies. Agents explained nothing. Important coverages were missing. Large insurance companies (you know who they are) used drones to shoot aerial images and only covered what they could see. How can a company whose actual job is to protect a family or a business from risk possibly cover indoor areas and equipment VISITING the property? They can’t. The final straw was when Ed met a client who had not been contacted by her ‘agent’ in 8 years. 8 years! To say it made Ed angry is being downright polite.

Beef and Dairy farming has very specific risk management needs which have been largely lumped into large corporate portfolios. Many of the agents who sell these coverages are neither experienced in the world of cattle nor understand the culture.

It was this neglect and disconnection that inspired Edward to create The Fence Post Agency – a company born from a desire to fill the gap. As y’all know, the fence post is where we go to meet our neighbors and talk. It’s where we go to catch up and help each other, if need be. Ed watched his Daddy have many fence post meetings – even though they were 16 miles away.

Today, The Fence Post Agency is composed of agents whom have understanding and knowledge of beef and dairy farming. Many of our agents are the children of farmers or even occasionally, farmers themselves.

In support of these values, Edward issued an edict saying that, “We will not insure ANY properties we have not visited.” If you have farms or ranches in Kentucky and New York, we are on a plane to visit and document them.

As our priority is to put people first, we decided on partnership over profit. As such, we like to use the phrase, “We look after you” with our clients because we intend on being involved with you, your family, your business and your growth. We intend to remain in constant contact with you regarding everything happening in your world. Changes big and small matter. Don’t be surprised if one of our agents mysteriously appears at your farm to say hello and check up on you…stranger things have happened. THAT is what it means to be ‘looked after

Why Ed Built The Fence Post Agency

Ten years ago, while working in food security and public health, Ed saw a massive gap in the market—ranchers and farmers were chronically underinsured.
Some didn’t have insurance at all. Others thought they were covered—until disaster struck, and they realized their policies were riddled with holes. Too many stories ended the same way: herds and operations wiped out without a lick of compensation.
Ed dug deeper. What did ranchers actually need? Why weren’t they getting it? The answer was clear: NEGLECT.
Large insurance carriers weren’t paying attention. Agents weren’t explaining policies, important coverages were missing, and decisions were being made from behind a desk rather than in the field. Some companies even relied on drone images instead of actually visiting the land—only insuring what they could see from the sky.
The final straw was when Ed met a client who had not been contacted by her ‘agent’ in eight years. EIGHT YEARS! To say it made Ed angry is being downright polite.
And Ed wasn’t about to let that slide.

Why Ranchers and Farmers Deserve Better

Cattle operations aren’t one-size-fits-all—so why should your insurance be?
The big-name insurance carriers treat ranchers and farmers like a line item on a spreadsheet. Many don’t know—or care—about the unique risks that come with raising cattle, running a dairy farm, or managing pastureland.
That’s why Ed created The Fence Post Agency—to cut through the nonsense and actually serve the people who keep this country running.
Too many agents are completely disconnected from ranch life. They don’t ask the right questions, don’t visit the land, and don’t understand the industry. How can you protect a ranch if you’ve never stepped foot on it?

The Fence Post Difference

As y’all know, the fence post is where we go to meet our neighbors and talk. It’s where we go to catch up and help each other, if need be. That’s exactly what we do here.

We Walk Every Property

If we insure it, we’ve seen it. If you’ve got ranches in wyoming and a dairy farm in kentucky, we’re making the trip.

We Know Cattle

Our team isn’t just made up of insurance professionals—many of us come from ranching and farming families ourselves.

We Believe in Partnership, Not Just Policies

You’re not just a client. You’re part of a network of ranchers, farmers, and cattlemen who deserve real protection.
That’s why we say we look after you—because we mean it.

We Look After You.

As our priority is to put people first, we decided on partnership over profit. As such, we like to use the phrase, “We look after you” with our clients because we intend on being involved with you, your family, your business and your growth.
We intend to remain in constant contact with you regarding everything happening in your world. Changes big and small matter. Don’t be surprised if one of our agents mysteriously appears at your farm to say hello and check up on you… stranger things have happened. THAT is what it means to be looked after.

We’re Here to Protect What You’ve Built

The land, the herd, the operation—it’s all worth protecting, and it’s all worth doing right.
Let’s make sure your ranch has the coverage it deserves.
